Alex Barkas, Ph.D.

Alex joined our board of directors in 2001. Alex is a Managing Director of Prospect Venture Partners, a venture capital firm. Prior to co-founding Prospect Venture Partners I, II and III, he was a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers from 1991 to 1997, where he focused on healthcare product company investments. Prior to Kleiner Perkins, Alex was a founder and CEO of BioBridge Associates, a health care industry consulting firm. Alex is currently Chairman of the Board of Geron Corporation and Tercica, Inc., and serves on the board of directors of Amicus Therapeutics, Inc. and several private life science companies.

Alex received a Ph.D. in biology from New York University and a B.A. in Biology from Brandeis University, where he currently is Chairman of the University Science Advisory Council and serves on the Board of Trustees.

Peter Barrett, Ph.D.

Peter joined our board of directors in March 2002. He is a partner at Atlas Venture, a venture capital firm. He joined Atlas Venture in 2002. Previously, Peter was a co-founder and Executive Vice President and Chief Business Officer of Celera Genomics, a molecular diagnostics company, positions he had held since 1998. Before Celera, Peter held senior management positions at The Perkin-Elmer Corporation, most recently serving as Vice President, Corporate Planning and Business Development. Peter currently sits on the Advisory Council of the Barnett Institute of Chemical and Biological Analysis at Northeastern University. He serves or has served on the boards of directors of the following public companies: Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Helicos BioSciences Corporation, AKELA Pharma Inc. and Momenta Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Peter received a B.S. in chemistry from Lowell Technological Institute (now known as the University of Massachusetts, Lowell) and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Northeastern University. He also completed Harvard Business School’s Management Development Program.

Kenneth Bate

Ken joins Archemix from NitroMed where he served as President and CEO. Previously, Ken held positions as Executive Vice President, Head of Commercial Operations and Chief Financial Officer of Millennium Pharmaceuticals and as Vice President of Sales and Marketing and Chief Financial Officer at Biogen (now Biogen Idec). He is a founding partner of JSB Partners, an investment banking and transaction advisory firm focused on the biopharmaceutical industry. Currently a director of Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and AVEO Pharmaceuticals Inc., Ken is a graduate of Williams College and The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned an M.B.A.

John M. Maraganore, Ph.D.

John joined our board of directors in 2006. Currently, he is the President and Chief Executive Officer and has been a member of the board of directors of Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biotechnology company, since December 2002. From April 2000 to December 2002, John served as Senior Vice President, Strategic Product Development for Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. From April 1997 to April 2000, John served as Millennium’s Vice President, Strategic Planning and M&A and as General Manager of Millennium BioTherapeutics, Inc., a former subsidiary of Millennium. Before joining Millennium, John served in several capacities, including Director of Biological Research and Director of Market and Business Development for Biogen, Inc. At Biogen, John invented Angiomax®, a direct thrombin inhibitor currently marketed by The Medicines Company. Before Biogen, John was a Senior Scientist at Zymogenetics, Inc. and a Visiting Research Scientist at The Upjohn Company.

John received an M.S. and Ph.D. in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Chicago.

Corey Mulloy

Corey joined our board of directors in March 2004. He has been a General Partner of Highland Capital Partners, a venture capital firm, since April 2005. Corey was employed at Highland Capital Partners from 1997 to 1999 and then rejoined in 2001. Prior to 1997, Corey held positions at Robertson Stephens & Company and The Whitman Group.

Corey received a B.A. from Swarthmore College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

Michael Ross, Ph.D.

Michael joined our board of directors in July 2002. Currently, he is a Managing Partner with SV Life Sciences Advisers, or SVLS, a venture capital firm. Michael joined SVLS in 2001. Prior to joining SVLS, Michael was a Managing Partner in Didyma, LLC, a biotechnology management consulting firm from 1999 to 2002. Prior to Didyma, Michael was the Chief Executive Officer of Arris Pharmaceutical Corporation from 1990 to 1993, MetaXen LLC from 1996 to 1999, Carta Proteomics Inc. from 1999 to 2001 and CyThera, Inc. from 1999 to 2001. Michael was employed at Genentech from 1978 to 1990, serving in several roles, including Vice President of Development and later Vice President of Medicinal and Biomolecular Chemistry. He serves or has served on the boards of directors of Arris Pharmaceutical Corporation, and the board of the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College.

Michael received an A.B. from Dartmouth College, a Ph.D. in chemistry from the California Institute of Technology and completed a post doctorate in molecular biology at Harvard University.
